Communication Sciences & Disorders

The EPIC project

Introduction, key concepts  and purpose

The EPIC project is concerned with Speech-Language Therapy (SLT) and Audiology (A) practices being equitable, population-based, innovative and communication and swallowing centred. While SLT/A provide valuable services, global practices appeared to represent colonial system values. It is for this reason that decolonial and critical sciences were offered as a means for transformation, allowing decoloniality to be explored within the realm of the EPIC projects using South African emerging practices.  While South African emerging practices are used, the EPIC project aims to generate international discussions and research.

About EPIC

The EPIC project advocates for:

  • Redefining communication disorder professions’ cultural borderlands to engage Northern with Southern ideologies
  • Critically strengthening the professional practice transformation
  • Decolonial thinking and transformation
  • Critically reflect on hegemonic Northern practices
