Professor Roy McConkeyPosition

Honorary Lecturer for Disability Studies Postgraduate Programmes, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Cape Town.

Roy is Professor of Developmental Disabilities at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland; a post jointly funded by the Health and Social Care Board of Northern Ireland. A psychologist by training and a native of Belfast, he has previously held posts at the University of Manchester, in Dublin with St Michaelís House and in Scotland with the Brothers of Charity Services.

He has worked in the field of intellectual disability for nearly 40 years and has authored, co-authored and edited over 15 books, and published over 100 book chapters and research papers in learned journals.

His main research interests focus on the social inclusion of people with disabilities, the provision of support services to family carers, and the development and evaluation of new models of service provision, nationally and internationally.

He has acted as a consultant to various United Nations agencies and International NGOs. This work has taken him to some 20 countries in Africa, Asia and South America, including Malaysia. He is an Honorary Professor at the University of Cape Town, South Africa and a Fellow of the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disability. In 2010, the American Association of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities selected him for their International Award.
